CYPRESS PARK LITTLE LEAGUE

T-Ball Rules (Detailed)

The game is the entry sport to baseball and softball for young players, generally five to six years old. Members of two teams take turns hitting a ball off a batting tee set on home plate. Batters try to get on base and advance to home; fielders try to prevent that from happening. The elimination of pitching allows children to participate without the fear of being hit by a pitched ball. T-Ball develops the primary baseball skills of hitting, running, fielding and throwing. The players gain an understanding of the fundamental rules, which allows minimally competitive league play at all age levels.

RECOMMENDED RULES OF PLAY

• Players' ages are five to six

• Players on a team – 7 minimum, 12 maximum

Note: more than 12 players on the field or batting is not advised

• 50 feet between the bases (approx. 17 yards/paces)

• A real or imaginary playing line is drawn between first base and third

base or an arc 40 feet from home plate. This line is created to ensure

safety for all players. If they are too close to the batter they may

be injured – PLEASE KEEP THEM BACK

• No fielder may cross the 40ft playing line until the ball is hit

• Every player bats (“CBO” continuous batting order)

• All players will play in the field – no player will sit off

• Players will be placed in the primary positions, including “pit-stop”

which is to be situated between 1st and 2nd base, and all remaining

players will be spread through the outfield

• Players will play equal time in the infield and outfield positions

• The ball is hit off a batting tee (please see “Coach-Pitch” below)

• There are no walks or strikeouts

• No stealing. Player stays on the base until the ball is hit

• An inning is defined as both teams achieving a “bat around” and every

player has batted once

• A defensive inning is NOT over when 3 players are put out

• Defensive outs are encouraged as it is part of the game. Every batter

or runner isn’t safe

• When the last batter hits the ball, after the ball in play is fielded and

that play is completed, all the base runners on base at the time run

around the diamond to home plate

• A batter is allowed a maximum of one base per hit. There are no

extra bases, regardless of the enormity of the hit

• Standard game is three innings or a maximum of 90 minutes

• Scores are not kept – both teams win!

• Safety helmets must be worn

• Bats – 24”/25"/26" long. 2Ό" diameter, max. 17 to 20 ounces

• Ball - 9" to 9½" around; 4 to 5 ounces. Softer than a standard

baseball. Molded core or sponge rubber center

• Gloves - 12" long, max

• Tee - adjustable, flexible tube on a moveable base

• Athletic footwear must be worn

• The Home team is responsible for preparing the field for play –

setting out the bases, raking the infield and pitchers mound, lining the

field, etc. The Visiting Team is responsible for raking the infield and

pitcher’s mound after the game and returning all gear and tools to the

secure box

COACH-PITCH is a modification of the game usually reserved for older

players or for younger players whose batting skills have advanced. A coach

throws the ball to the batter. Underhand pitches can be thrown with an arc

to reduce speed. Overhand pitches can be thrown from one knee on the

ground to put the pitcher at the same level as the batter. If the player is

unable to hit the pitched ball after a pre-determined number of throws --

usually, four to seven -- the ball is placed on a tee and the player's turn

continues. All other rules are the same. T-BALL recognizes the benefits

provided by coach-pitch and endorses its use; especially, after the youngest

of players have gained confidence in the batting situation. However a coach

may elect not to pitch to players that feel more comfortable hitting from

the tee.
